Meg 2: The Trench (2023)
Meg 2: The Trench
Look. Just because a movie has a really low score on Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t mean that it’s not fun and wildly entertaining. That’s exactly the case for this sequel. In fact, I like it even better than the first one. It’s one of the most pointless movies I’ve ever seen, but it’s just so fun. It’s on the same level of movies like ‘Batman and Robin’ and ‘Superman IV: The Quest for Pace’. It’s not very good, but it provides a fun and exciting experience. The story, in many ways, is a repeat of the first movie, as there were several similarities I spotted all throughout the film. It’s literally just man vs shark. There was also the really weird element of opposing humans who were bent on killing Jonas and the gang. It makes absolutely no sense, and adds literally zero to the overall plot. It adds useless drama, almost like the writers ran out of ideas. But do I like that? Yes I do. And was it super fun? Absolutely. It’s just one of those movies where you shouldn’t look too far into it. I also really liked the presence of other deadly animals, not just megs. It opens up the thought of how many undiscovered species are actually in our oceans now. Something interesting but also scary to think about. It’s a great concept, even if it’s a little dumb and slightly overused. Most of the characters were also kind of pointless, but it was nice to see some familiar faces return. Statham shines again, and he basically plays underwater James Bond. In fact, I would describe this whole movie as “Jaws meets Jurassic Park meets James Bond”. See, doesn’t that sound fun? Anyways, the CGI was pretty solid all throughout the movie, with some SWEET looking megs. I love those things so much. Overall, this movie has exciting adventure, with awesome creatures and really fun action. A bit corny sometimes, but straight entertainment. I’d recommend this if you like giant sea creatures eating people. It’s a great summer movie!
