Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace
Despite its horrific 10% Rotten Tomatoes score, I actually really enjoyed this one. Now I would agree that this movie isn’t good, but that doesn’t stop it from being fun. I really loved the cheesiness of it, and the late 80’s vibe is very clear all throughout. The writing is quite horrible, and incredibly stupid and corny. But it’s the kind of stupid that still makes a movie fun. I liked the return of Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, although all the rest of the antagonists were incredibly dumb. Jon Cryer was extremely obnoxious, and Mark Pillow kind of felt like a discount comic book version of Ivan Drago. But, Christopher Reeve is still really awesome as Superman, and I like how Lois comes back into the story (unlike the third movie). Most of the effects were incredibly awful, and an insane step down since the first movie. There were some horrible green screen moments, although there were a few moments that were somewhat solid. The score was alright, but nothing special. The main theme feels too modern, so though it’s still good, it doesn’t have the same spin that John Williams gave it. Overall, this was a horrible movie, although I still liked it. I wouldn’t recommend it if you want to critique it, but I would if you just want a stupid, cheesy superhero movie.
