Scream (1996)
Scream
Do you like scary movies? This was the first horror movie I ever watched, and that was when I was 12 and home alone, so it terrified my socks off. It still holds up, and I enjoy it so much. The opening scene is arguably, to me, one of the best opening scenes in cinema history, and it perfectly preps you for the upcoming terror. It immediately jumps into the action and gives you something to think about from the very start. The reason this movie is so terrifying is because it feels so realistic, and it feels like it could easily have happened in real life. I also seriously love how the story uses high schoolers, which makes it feel even more real. I like how it shows how young teens can be underestimated, and that everybody can be affected by evil, no matter how old they are. Although there aren’t a whole lot of jump scares, the fear factor is still pretty high, and Ghostface is easily one of my favorite horror movie characters. The movie is shot super well, and the last 30ish minutes of the movie is so incredible and it throws so many twists at you. You always question who to suspect, and just when you think you know, something happens that totally changes the game. The music was alright, and I loved the use of the high strings in certain scenes. The acting was also really good, and especially Lillard and Ulrich, you fit and play their roles SO well. The last thing I want to compliment is the use of horror movie culture throughout this film, with references to Halloween, Jamie Lee Curtis, Norman Bates, and many more. It makes this movie feel even more real life and grounded. I would highly recommend it to horror fans, and it’s easily one of the best horror movies I’ve seen. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
