Pearl (2022)
Pearl
This was definitely an upgrade from the previous movie. At first, it started off a little slow, much like X. But once it really started picking up pace, it started pretty strong up until the end. There’s so many fun and haunting surprises that keep the movie fresh. Movies about origin stories are starting to feel a bit old nowadays, though this one does it right. They study a character you know very little about, until once the movie ends. I can understand the hype for this movie. The plot was pretty good, and it made you both like and detest Pearl at the same time. She was relatable and ambitious, so sometimes you cheered for her. Other times, she obviously did some very…unethical things, which made it hard for me to like her. Mia Goth’s performance was just so good, though. Even when Pearl was doing everything you shouldn’t do, you couldn’t help but admire her. It’s just such an embodied performance. I definitely liked her better in this movie than the first one. That’s a big reason this one is better, because of how well she did. I also really, really enjoyed seeing future Superman David Corenswet. Another thing that stood out to me was the color. It was very vivid, which isn’t what you always get in these movies. It had the old Technicolor/Panavision look to it, which fit the times perfectly. Overall, this movie was great, with great acting, awesome effects and makeup, and just straight up fun. I’d definitely recommend it to all horror fans, even if you haven’t seen ‘X’. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
