Cabaret (1972)
Cabaret
I’m gonna be honest, I was slightly disappointed with this. From a critics perspective, I thought it was pretty well made, and honestly, one of the best musicals of the 20th century. The characters were pretty interesting, and they were all over the spectrum of personality. Some were very quirky, some were born to entertain, some were born to love. They brought livelihood to the setting, with great energy and flashy moves. The music was super fun and jumpy. It had me tapping my foot, and my favorite song of the movie was “Cabaret”. Liza Manelli is an awesome singer, and you can clearly tell that she takes after her legendary mother. It’s such a great soundtrack. The story was pretty well written, and the relationships were emotional and carefree. It causes you to really get inside the feelings of everyone. I liked the romance mixed in with the song and dance routines. The choreography was good, the lighting and cinematography was insane, and the makeup was colorful and exaggerated (in a good way). As I said, a well made movie. Here comes my complaint: I really never could get into it. I mildly enjoyed it, but there were some parts where I just struggled paying attention, and I can’t really explain why. It’s one of those movies where I didn’t get totally invested, so it felt kind of long, and I didn’t care as much as I wanted to. But, I think on a rewatch, I’d probably enjoy it more, now that I know what happens. That doesn’t make much sense, but it does to me, so I’m leaving it in. Overall, this movie deserved every Oscar it won, though it’s not one of my favorites. I would still recommend it to most musical fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
