It Happened One Night
Often referred to as the first screwball comedy, this is easily one of the better films of the 20th century. It’s extremely hard to make an argument that this isn’t one of the best films ever made. It’s extremely funny and witty, while still being able to have its serious moments, and it keeps you on your seat until the end. Sometimes with comedies, it’s easy to turn off your brain and just watch it because you can. But this one keeps you invested with the story, while still being absolutely hilarious, but not in-your-face about it. The humor feels very natural. There’s a little bit of physical comedy, but the line deliveries from the cast are what sells it. So many little quips had me rolling. The plot wasn’t too hard to follow, with the classic “spoiled girl falls in love with simple man instead of wealthy man” storyline. But it’s more intricate than that, with a fun road trip adventure that constantly keeps you guessing. The dialogue, again, was extremely well written. The chemistry between Gable and Colbert was fantastic, and some of the best I’ve seen in any film. Whether they were arguing or having the time of their life, they fit together so nicely. Their Academy Awards were well deserved, especially for Clark Gable. It’s one of the funniest performances ever, even when he was being deadly serious or frustrated. Plus, he’s the most elegant looking man of the 20th century, so he had that going for him too. Overall, this is about as close to perfect as it can get, and certainly deserved its Best Picture win. I’m looking forward to watching it again, and I’d recommend it to all comedy/romance fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
