Johnny English (2003)
Johnny English
It is so refreshing to see Rowan Atkinson in a (somewhat) serious role, because most people know him as Mr. Bean. Although I absolutely love Mr. Bean, I love seeing Rowan playing an actual, almost rational thinking character. This movie reminded me a lot of the Get Smart TV show, because of its hilarious take on espionage and secret agents. It had the same style of humor, which is why this movie was funny. It was also almost a spoof of something along the lines of James Bond. This wasn’t necessarily a parody, but it was a comedic spy movie about a British agent who wears a bow tie. It still had plenty of moments to laugh at, as well as having an actual plot. It wasn’t a comedy that was just a bunch of random jokes in a row, but everything was connected and flowed smoothly. However, despite this movie having a funny story, it was also kinda bad, but in a good way. It’s one of those movies where its just so stupid and corny but you still enjoy it. It had plenty of Mr. Bean humor, including several bathroom jokes, mooning, and everything else like that. This movie is definitely a hit or miss, depending on your sense of humor. The acting was all right, and although a lot of it was exaggerated, Rowan pulled off a great British spy. Like I said, it’s corny, but still fun to watch. I really liked the score, and it had a great espionage/action sound to it. It almost has the classic James Bond spy feel, in terms of the way the music was arranged. You get the high trumpets with the strings and bass, and despite the comedic feel of the movie, it has a really serious and intense feel. Overall, this movie was stupid and pointless, yet fun and enjoyable. I’d probably recommend it if you love spoofs, but if you don’t, then this movie probably isn’t for you.
