Society of the Snow (2023)
Society of the Snow
This is one of the best survival movies I have ever seen. It’s kind of sad that I haven’t seen any buzz around this when it came out. The only reason I ever found out about it was because it was nominated for two Oscars (which it deserves). It’s too bad more people haven’t heard about it, because it’s so thrilling and intriguing. It’s based on the true story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which I had actually slightly known about before seeing this. Despite having some previous knowledge, there was still zero publicity for this (at least for me), which is disappointing. Anyways, I won’t discuss much about the plot, solely because I don’t want to ruin anything if you don’t know anything about the flight. It sounds like I’m discussing this tragedy as entertainment, but what I’m trying to say is that if you watch this without prior knowledge, it’s easier to put yourself in the character's position. That’s one (of many) things the movie is really good at: the characters. It takes the most ordinary people, and across the 2 and half hours you’re with them, you learn to be just as close to them as they actually were. Obviously not physically, but mentally and emotionally. I do think there was a little too much dialogue, and although it’s important, and to me, crucial, it made this a little hard to sit through. It just felt really long. That’s all I’ll say about this movie. Just mentally prepare yourself for some depressing survival stories. I’d recommend it to all thriller/adventure fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
