Batman (1943)
Batman (1943)
This was the very first time anybody got to see Batman on a movie screen, and I have to say, it was probably amazing. I’m definitely envious of the kids who got to go see a Batman serial every week in a movie theater, so being able to watch this was really fun. This serial was actually created and filmed in response to Pearl Harbor. The main villain was Dr. Daka, a Japanese man who wants to take over the world. He was played by a white man with makeup, and there were lots of references to the Japanese being an evil people. Essentially, this was almost entirely propaganda, but it was still really fun to watch. Now you have to remember, it was 1943, so absolutely everything about this was really cheesy and corny. However, it’s so fun to watch because of the corniness, and the stupidity of the episodes make it so special. The acting is actually pretty good, and though many of the scenes have some dumb dialogue and whatnot, a lot of it is pretty good. Lewis Wilson is also really good as Bruce Wayne/Batman, and though he isn’t remembered as playing Batman, he might actually be one of my favorite Batmen. I also liked Robin as well, but Wilson as Batman was actually pretty amazing. The Batsuit was really cheesy and cheap, but as I said, it was 1943. The opening theme song was incredibly awesome, and it sounds perfect for a Batman theme song. Overall, it’s a cheesy, silly, corny serial, but that’s what makes it so fun.
