Last Christmas (2019)
Last Christmas
Despite the 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, I think this film is underrated. No, it’s not super great, but it’s very emotional and has plenty of feeling, which is the main reason why. It’s very silly and cheesy at times, and it feels just a bit higher quality than your average Hallmark movie. It’s a very obvious rom-com that has common themes of love, family, and finding your best self. The story itself feels very repetitive from other movies, and I didn’t find a super big amount of original ideas. Like I said two sentences ago, there’s a lot of common themes. It also has basically the exact same twist that ‘The Sixth Sense’, which I noticed about halfway through before it was revealed. It works well enough for the story, but it came as no surprise to me. The acting was also well enough, though again, very cheesy at times. Emilia Clarke was nice, Michelle Yeoh was awesome, and Emma Thompson was fun and kooky. The characters were whatever, and not super memorable. I never really felt super pulled to any of them, except for Kate. Lastly, the soundtrack was phenomenal, as it almost entirely consisted of Wham! and George Michael singles. I am a big Wham! fan, so that was a very nice treat for me. Overall, this film is funny, heartwarming (and heartbreaking), and has a nice little message. It’s goofy, but a nice romantic watch for Christmas softies. I’d probably recommend it to most fans of rom-coms and Hallmark movies, though it’s not one I think I’d watch again.
