Gremlins (1984)
Gremlins
All I’m saying is this: this film could never be made in this time and age. There’s such a vintage, nostalgic, and authentic charm that this film has, and honestly, most films nowadays don’t have that kind of feel. There’s just something about 80’s films that contain practical effects and physical props that make it so great. It’s just so unique in so many ways. The story definitely stands out, solely because it introduces the iconic gremlins. Following it is simple: a gremlin shows up, the worst thing to happen to it happens, and they all terrorize the town. Sometimes it’s very silly, which is why this is often considered a dark comedy. There’s so many moments, some of which are pretty brutal, where you find yourself laughing. Especially the bar and cinema scenes. It’s a very funny film. It is also a great action movie, with explosions, blood and guts, and tons of fighting and chasing. The whole last half of the film is like that. The animatronics moved very well, looked pretty realistic, and were hilarious. All the designs for each and every one were perfect and captured many personalities. They were all individuals and their own little selfs. I love it. I’ll do some cons real quick, then wrap up. I think the biggest flaw in the film is the dialogue and some character writing. Most of it is extremely cheesy and sometimes downright stupid, like the “my dad was in the chimney” scene. That was just awful. But besides that, the film is great. I’d recommend it to all fans of 80s action/horror/comedy, especially if you like films that use practical effects. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
