The Color Purple (1985)
The Color Purple (1985)
I’ve heard a lot of great things about this movie, and though I think it might be slightly overrated, it was a good first time watch. With Spielberg being one of my favorites directors ever, it was only a matter of time before I saw it, so I figured seeing it a few days before I see the new one only makes sense. From start to finish, I was very intrigued with the characters and the story. It was heard not to look away. Despite that, I do think there were some speed bumps where I got lost a couple times. I didn’t necessarily stop paying attention, but my mind did wander a few times. I think the runtime makes it a little hard to sit through, but besides that, it wasn’t too bad. The story, based on the book, was really good, and though it sometimes felt complex, it was still (for the most part) understandable. I definitely want to read the book now. I don’t want to say too much about the plot, because it brings out so many emotions, and it’s a journey you have to take for yourself. Without revealing much, it does a great study of the early 1900’s, and the treatment of African Americans. It’s tragic, but also eye-opening, and very powerful. I’m so excited to see the new one solely for that reason. It’ll be nice to see the point of view it takes, especially being filmed 38 years later than the first one. Anyways, the cast did a fantastic job, with some great performances from Whoopi, Oprah, Danny Glover, and literally everyone else. Whether they were nice or mean, the performances put you right in the center of everything. Overall, this movie was pretty well made, though a couple tiny rough spots threw me off a little bit. I’d definitely recommend this to all drama fans, especially if you like period pieces. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
