Sinners
Ryan Coogler, you mastermind. You absolute beast. What a man you are. I had pretty high expectations going into this, especially considering the Rotten Tomatoes scores, and early reviews on Twitter. I can very confidently say that all of my expectations were met. It really is hard to find anything to complain about. I think the only possible negative thing to say is that it took me several minutes to truly get into it. Not that it started slow, I just took my time settling into it. Once I did, it was an illusive story of music, family, and freaking awesome bloody vampires. It’s hard to beat a good tale of vampires. Coogler turns them into his own version, and makes something you’ve never seen before. I’ve seen a solid chunk of vampire films, and this one stands out because of the culture and setting. Every moment felt new and fresh. The pacing was great, as it doesn’t rush the presence of the vampires. There’s a slow building sense of dread, and when they finally arrive, it’s an adrenaline rush until the very end. Absolutely amazing writing. The performances were authentic, believable, and both serious and funny. THe little sprinkles of comedy was perfect. Michael B. Jordan playing twins is genius, and he excels at it so much. Each character is their own and identifiable. The supporting cast around him help ground the film, despite it being fantastical. The action was awesome, with graphic violence that was exciting and gross. Great use of both makeup and VFX. But maybe the greatest element of this film was the score. Ludwig Goransson is cementing himself as one of the greatest composers of all time. The music in this is blues-y with a soul sound that moves the story, enhances the characters, and provides love and emotion. Literally one of the best scores of the last couple years. Give Ludwig another Oscar! Overall, this film was phenomenally made. It’s exciting, thrilling, passionate, and an all around good time. There’s nothing better than a good historical thriller. I’d definitely recommend this to all horror/action fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
