Batman (1989)
This is a very personal film to me, as it’s the first Batman movie (besides ‘66) that really showed me who Batman was. I remember the first time I ever watched it, and afterwards, I was totally blown away. I really felt Batman come to life, and Michael Keaton instantly became my favorite Batman, a position he held for several years until I met Batfleck. This movie was also in my top 5 favorites for several years as well. So, to say I love this film is an understatement. The story is absolutely amazing, as we get to see a truly dark Batman, apart from anything released previously. Going from the ‘66 colorful Batman to this one was a major shift in how he is portrayed, and Keaton set the stage for every Batman after him. I love how it looks more into his personal life in terms of his parents, as well as how he describes himself as having almost two personalities. Like I said, it’s such a darker version than what people were used to. And bringing in Jack Nicholson as the Joker is legitimately perfect casting. Although Joaquin Phoenix is my favorite Joker, Nicholson comes in as an easy second, and an argument could be made that he’s the greatest Joker of all time. He fits the bill so perfectly and I wouldn’t have wanted anyone else in that role (and don’t forget that he has one of the best Joker looks ever). I also loved the inclusion of Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent. It’s a bit disappointing that we never got to see his character play out (until Batman Forever, but by that time, he was replaced by Tommy Lee Jones). I loved all the action scenes, especially once Batman reaches the top of the clock tower. Batman’s batsuit is one of the best live action ones of all time, as well as him also having, arguably, the greatest Batmobile ever put on screen. And the score is so freaking fantastic. Danny Elfman really came up clutch, delivering one of the best Batman scores of all time. I’m not a fan of the Prince songs, but I’m willing to overlook them. The main theme is so beautiful yet ominous, and it’s easily a top 10 theme song of all time. Overall, this movie is mint. I would highly recommend it to everyone, especially if you want to get into DC or study Batman’s character. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
