Speedway (1968)
Speedway
As one of the few racing movies I’ve seen, this is one that would definitely be a favorite for NASCAR fans, even though it’s a really cheesy movie. You can very much tell it was made in the late 60’s because of the corniness of several scenes, which even though they may seem stupid, it’s still pretty funny. I really enjoyed Bill Bixby’s character, probably even more than I enjoyed Elvis’s. Both Bixby and Presley did a pretty good job, and they made a good combination of comic relief. The music was decently good, and the opening song was really good. Although the movie didn’t really explain why a racecar driver randomly went to clubs and sang, it still worked and made it fun. One thing I thoroughly enjoyed was the color. It was really bright and flashy, and it made everything feel really happy. I also really enjoyed the way the racing scenes were shot, and I’ll even give it a bonus point for filming at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Overall, I don’t think it was one of Elvis’s best roles, but it was still decently entertaining. Not one I would watch again, but I would definitely recommend it to my racing buddies.
