Woman of the Hour (2024)
Woman of the Hour
I don’t feel like I have a huge amount to say about this film. I guess I’ll start by saying that it’s Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, and she did a decent job with it. It’s nothing groundbreaking or super crazy. In fact, my biggest takeaway is that this film feels like every other Netflix true crime documentary/series out there. There was literally nothing at all that jumped out to me as being memorable or special. The film is based on Rodney Alcala and his crimes, and you spend the whole runtime pretty much just watching his crimes and seeing the one episode of The Dating Game. That’s about all there is to it. There just doesn’t seem to be much substance. The acting was fine, not much to brag about there. I did like the 70’s vibe with the hairstyles and outfits. You definitely felt the time and setting, which was one of the biggest strongpoints of the film. I also liked the way the episode of The Dating Game was shot, with the slightly grainy, vintage looking video. But that was really the only part of the film for me that really stood out. Overall, the film seems to lack a lot with plot and characters, but it has a couple moments that are decent. Anna Kendrick should get more credit then I’m giving her, I just didn’t care for this. I don’t really think I’d recommend it either unless you like the cheap feeling Netflix true crime stuff.
