Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
The first time I watched this, I thought it was boring, and just not good. However, upon further review, I definitely enjoy it way more, and I think it’s a very solid movie. I was never really a huge fan of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in my younger years, but she’s definitely grown on me a lot. So, when rewatching this, her character makes it so much more interesting than I thought it was before. I enjoyed both the main story, as well as Harley’s personal story. It’s a good continuation from Suicide Squad, but with way more information and excitement. The focus it puts on each character is awesome, and how they are all connected. And, it’s one of the best storytelling methods I’ve seen. It’s so unique, and you’d have to see the movie to really understand what I mean. I also enjoy how even though it’s her movie, you still get a fantastic look at the other characters. Black Canary and Huntress are the standouts (besides Harley), but the number one character of the whole dang movie is easily Roman Sionis. Ewan McGregor absolutely KILLS IT (I keep making this puns), and he is so menacing, yet hilarious. Honestly, I think it’s definitely a top 10 performance in the DCEU. I love him so much. I really love the soundtrack, and it’s somewhat reminiscent of Suicide Squad, but still unique. The effects were awesome as well. The movie doesn’t feel as reliant on CGI as Suicide Squad did, which makes it so much better. The animation in the beginning opening scene is awesome, and sets the tone for the movie. And I absolutely love the costumes and setting. Despite the serious tone of the movie, it’s still very colorful and campy. Bits of it feel like a level of Lego Batman, which makes it so fun. Overall, this movie is awesome, and I’d recommend it to all superhero/DC fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now! I’m gonna go eat Sal’s egg sandwich now.
