Supergirl (Season 1) (2015-2016)
Supergirl (Season 1)
Much like The Flash, this is a colorful and vibrant show, while still having some dark material present. So far in the Arrowverse, Arrow is really the only show that remains consistent in dark tone, both color and story-wise. In Supergirl, you get plenty of action and character development, while still having a bright tone to it. I’ve very much enjoyed it, although there were a couple episodes that felt a bit slow. The main storyline is solid, though like the first season of The Flash, it’s a little all over the place. There’s a main antagonist(s), but when they aren’t present, each episode is just kind of a standalone story (which works, but still feels a little weird). I love how the show is made to be serious, yet it’s still cheesy in several aspects. The CGI is actually pretty decent, except for a few select moments. The overall VFX gives the show a campy-ish feel, but still makes sure to push the serious points. It works in such a great way. Melissa Benoist is great as Kara/Supergirl. She has such a great look. It’s the classic Supergirl design, which has always been great. I’m also really glad that Martian Manhunter is involved in this show, as he’s always been a favorite of mine. I’m not a super huge fan of his alien design, but it’s not that bad. All the different villains were so cool and diverse, even though I’m also not a huge fan of the Kryptonian/family story. It works, but just feels slightly off. However, it’s not enough to bring down the show. I’m really excited to see Superman arrive in some future episodes, even though Supergirl is just as awesome. Overall, this season was very solid, though there is room for improvement. I would recommend it to DC/superhero fans, and you don’t really have to see any of the Arrowverse to understand what’s happening (for now). This season is Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
