Dune (1984)
Dune (1984)
This was much better the second time around, although it's still a poorly made movie. David Lynch took the reins for this, and you can obviously tell that it’s something he did. It’s already outlandish enough, but he puts both an interesting and weird spin on it. The story is based on the book, which I read (with the help of SparkNotes), and it’s pretty decent. This movie is definitely less confusing than the book is. However, I still got lost several times throughout the film. I think it tries to cram in too much and the plot isn't super coherent if you haven't read the book or watched Denis Villenueve's version. A lot of it is very dialogue driven, and I would much rather see some giant worms being cool creatures than have to listen to space drama. It’s written somewhat decently, but it can still be complicated trying to keep up. The high point of the movie is easily the practical props and sets. Using physical objects to make creatures or scenery is always awesome. The special effects were very sucky, but it’s an early 80’s space drama, so there ain’t much they can do anyways. It was very cheesy and corny. I really loved the costumes and human designs. They were all so unique and they stand out from other space movies such as Star Wars or Star Trek. But, besides all that stuff, the movie is very slow and boring, and it isn’t one I necessarily enjoyed. I’d only recommend it to the most die hard sci-fi fans.
