Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
I’m not totally sure how to feel about this movie. I feel like it couldn’t decide what it wanted to be. Was it supposed to feel like a comic? Was it purely sci-fi? The production left me pretty confused, with several questions on why certain things were done the way they were. It turns out that the entire movie is computer generated, except for the main characters. You can definitely tell it is, which is partially what confused me so much. It felt just so odd, but it also felt right at the same time. That’s what helps give the awesome sci-fi feel, which the movie exceeds at doing. It has a VERY comic book-y look, which I liked. I mean, straight out of the pages of a comic book. Even though it looked both wonky and cool, it doesn’t feel natural. The story also plays off of the sci-fi/comic book mood. It was stupid, but entertaining in the ‘Batman & Robin’ kind of way. Kind of horrible, but you can’t help but watch. The characters were that same kind of corny, too. The acting isn’t great, but the characters are (mostly) enjoyable. Of course, Jude Law is Jude Law, so I can’t help but love him. He was kind of like the Batman or Superman of his world. Overall, this movie was dumb, but still has some high points, and solid effects for its time. I’d like to see a modern remake of it. It’s definitely one I’ll probably revisit sometime in the future, and I’d probably recommend it if you like cheesy science fiction stuff.
