The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
So this is a prequel to the 2003 reboot, and I actually think I just barely like it better than the previous movie. It’s still not super great at times, but there are also some scenes that feel very similar to the original movie. In a way, many parts parallel to the original, although this obviously doesn’t hold a candle to the original. This was an extremely refreshing movie, mostly because it’s not just another cannibal family slasher (even though it is). It’s set a few years before 1973, so you get to see early Leatherface and how he gets into everything he does. It’s both an origin story, as well as its own fun little thing. Granted, the entire movie is pointless and doesn’t add too much, but I like that it at least adds something new. Many of the characters from the previous movie return, so it was nice not having to learn anyone new. I don’t think Leatherface was the best for a lot of the movie, but for the final 30-45 minutes, he was probably the best he’s been in any movie besides the first movie. In fact, the entire last 30-45 minutes is why I like this movie more than the previous. I wasn’t a fan of the first half, which felt slow and a bit drawn out. But the last half is super fun, and I loved it. All the effects and makeup is great and has the exaggerated 2000’s look, which only adds to the fun. Overall, this movie doesn't add much to the franchise, although there are some exciting scenes. I’m not sure I’d recommend it, unless you like grungy looking 2000’s horror movies.
