Get Smart (2008)
Get Smart (2008)
This movie was based on the Get Smart TV show from 1965-1970, which is my second favorite show of all time. I was super happy to finally be able to watch this movie, and I definitely enjoyed it. It was pretty dumb, but still very funny. It had a great story, which was your typical spy plot, as well as using some ideas from the original episodes. Speaking of the original episodes, this movie had a lot of throwbacks and easter eggs to the show, which I absolutely loved. There were so many moments where I totally lost it because of how exciting it was to see the references. If you haven’t seen the show, then you definitely won’t enjoy it as much. There were a lot of quotes and catchphrases that were used from the original show, with my personal favorite being “Missed it by that much!” There were also the iconic ones such as “Sorry about that, Chief!” and “The old……..trick.” You also get to see all of the original styles of cars that were used in the show, one of which was driven by the one and only Bernie Kopell. He played the original Siegfried, so being able to see his cameo was so exciting for me. And of course, you get to see Max’s infamous shoephone and the Cone of Silence. It was such an awesome moment, and it brings back great memories for me. The acting in this movie was pretty great, and it had a stellar cast of Steve Carrell, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin, Terry Crews, James Caan, and Bill Murray. Almost all of the characters used were based on the ones from the show. Being able to see a newer version of Max, 99, and Chief was so cool, and they all did a great job. I also liked being able to see Larabee, 13, and Hymie. However, I couldn’t stand how 99 and Larabee’s characters were written. They were the complete opposites of how they were in the show, which I hated. But, both Mel Brooks and Buck Henry (the original show creators) consulted, so if they liked it, then I guess it’s fine. The music was decently good overall, and although most of it felt like your stereotypical action/spy movie, I love the main theme. They used the same theme as the show, just revamped and more modern. Also, having the main theme with a recreation of the show intro was absolutely amazing, and I was so happy they added it. Overall, this movie was pretty good, and though there were some definitely dumb moments, this movie was great. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
