Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Singin’ in the Rain
Easily my favorite, as well as the best, movie soundtrack of all time, this is one that never gets old, and always amazes me every time I listen to it. I love it so much, and both the vocal and orchestral talents are so beautiful. Unfortunately, almost none of the songs were composed specifically for this film, although several of the lyrics were written for this movie. However, each arrangement of each song is so beautifully crafted, and it’s some of the best arranging you’ll ever hear in a cinematic soundtrack. The nice thing about this soundtrack is that it remains consistent throughout the whole movie. Even where there isn’t any singing or dancing, there is still music present, and it’s some of the prettiest filler music you’ll listen to. It all has the 1940’s swing sound to it, which is a big part of why I like it so much. And don’t even get me started on the vocals. Gene Kelly absolutely blows you away with his singing, and he definitely has one of the smoothest voices anyone has ever heard. His rendition of “Singin’ in the Rain” is one of the best songs ever sung, as well as one of the most iconic movie scenes/songs of all time. He’s able to put so much emotion into his voice, and every time I listen to it, it gives me chills. “You Were Meant for Me” is also a gorgeous love song, and he makes the lyrics resonate with so much love. “All I Do is Dream of You” is sung in the flapper sequence, but there is actually an extended outtake when Gene sings it. It’s not in the movie, but you can find it on the official soundtrack. It’s completely breath-taking, and I hate that it’s not in the movie. It’s definitely one of the best songs in a movie that was never actually in the movie. Both Gene and Donald also did an amazing job with “Moses Supposes”, and the reeds in that song are stunning. This great thing about the songs on this album is how well they compliment the dance scenes. “Broadway Melody” is FANTASTICALLY done, and though most of it is instrumental, it’s super entertaining to listen to, and it’s really, really easy to get lost in the music. Debbie Reynolds also does a fantastic job, and much like Gene, she also has a really smooth voice that carries you away. Overall, this is the greatest soundtrack of all time, and every single song is so perfect. Even if you haven’t seen the movie, I would still recommend listening to it if you like older musicals. This soundtrack is officially Berry Approved, so go listen to it now!
