Megalopolis (2024)
Megalopolis
Let me start off by saying this: ‘Megalopolis’ is severely underrated and underappreciated. I can understand why people don’t like it, and I definitely agree that there are some noticeable flaws. But the fun thing about being a fan of cinema is that you can look past all the critiquing and just enjoy yourself. That’s what I did here. I just sat back and let Coppola take charge. It makes me so happy to see directors write, produce, and direct their movies with no studio interference. You really get a taste of his mind and how much effort and passion he put into this movie. It does feel sloppy at times, and the story doesn’t always make sense, but the time and setting makes up for it. It feels futuristic, yet still in the past. It feels very surreal, yet still has a sense of authenticity. The blend between fantasy and purity was cool. The eccentric cast of characters was what helped boost the movie. Not only is the cast absolutely stacked, but each person is so unique and odd, and the performances were great. Especially from Adam Driver and Shia LaBeouf. The visuals were fantastic, though sometimes the CGI was pretty evident. But the cinematography felt very special to me, and it helped promote the sci-fi vibe. Great lighting, fun colors, and it just made me feel comfortable. Overall, this movie definitely lacks in terms of plot (though I looked past that), and it’s nothing incredibly crazy, but I still loved it and it just felt cool. Being able to see a Coppola film in theaters was extremely memorable and special. Never would I have thought that would happen in my life. I’d recommend this if you like his work and sci-fi/drama, though it’s not for everyone. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
