The Black Phone (2022)

The Black Phone

  • An incredible and suspenseful movie from start to finish, this is definitely one I would watch again. This is one of those horror movies that doesn’t necessarily rely on jump scares to be scary, but still makes for a nerve racking movie. It does have a couple minor jump scares, most of which got me pretty good. Overall, the movie is really good about keeping to the time it was set in, and it used the effect of a VCR/old camcorder in certain dream scenes, giving it a really cool feel. The soundtrack was decently good, and I enjoyed several scenes where the music added up perfectly with what was going on. I would like to mention one specific thing that I thought was really cool, and that was the shows Davey and Goliath and Emergency! being shown on the TV in two different scenes. I grew up watching Davey and Goliath, so that was a cool nostalgic moment for me. Another thing I really loved is that a lot of the movie reminds me of the Granny games that I’ve played (iykyk), which made the movie even cooler. I would highly recommend this movie to everyone who loves a good edge-of-your-seat film, and Ethan Hawke definitely does a terrifying and creepy job portraying his character. The only thing I didn't like about his character was that he didn’t really have a backstory or explanation of why he wore his mask and stuff like that, but it also adds a creepy element of not knowing why he does what he does. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it now!
