M3GAN (2023)
M3GAN
This was a very interesting movie. Mostly in a good way, although it definitely made me feel weirded out and uncomfortable in certain scenes (which is expected). I wasn’t really sure what to expect going into the movie, and after it was over, I still felt kind of questionable about it. Now most of the movie was somewhat entertaining, and definitely suspenseful. However, even though it has a runtime of less than two hours, it still felt really long to me. It felt like it took forever to start, which was pretty boring. But the whole movie did constantly move forward at the same pace, which I liked. Once the story really picks up, it keeps going strong up until the very end. I did really like the entire concept of M3GAN, and it’s very fitting for the times we’re in now. It feels modern enough, obviously with a couple stretched aspects. To me, this movie is exactly what I would expect our technology to evolve into, so the realistic feeling makes it feel more authentic. Plus, there’s just something about haywire AI that is scary. I wasn’t a huge fan of any of the characters, although the acting was still good. There were several scenes where I just wanted to laugh because of the corny tone the actors used. But that’s kind of what to expect when it comes to Blumhouse. I was really happy to see Violet McGraw do such a great job in this movie. Her older sister, Madeleine McGraw, recently starred in The Black Phone, so seeing both of them have the success they’re having is cool. Most of the effects were pretty good, especially M3GAN’s face. It has just enough of the AI look to distinguish it, but also just enough to almost make her human. The music was good, although some bits of it were a little too similar to Psycho. It had the classic horror strings sound, so though it was intense and suspenseful, it didn’t sound very original. Overall, this isn’t one I would necessarily watch again, although I would watch a potential sequel, as well as the rated R extended edition (if it gets released). Though it wasn’t my favorite, I’d still recommend it to horror/thriller fans.
