A Complete Unknown (2024)
A Complete Unknown
I’ve never been a huge fan of Bob Dylan, up until about a month ago. In preparation for this film, I listened to a sizable chunk of his filmography, so I could feel like I would appreciate the music more. Ultimately, I’m glad I did. I felt like I could connect much more to his thoughts and feelings as he went through his musical career. Once the film was done, I walked away an even bigger fan. Pretty much everything in it was quite, although I do have a complaint about the plot. It was entertaining, but it’s not really structured like your average biopic. It focuses more on the people around Bob Dylan, rather than Bob himself. You spend your time seeing how those people helped build Bob, rather than about Bob’s actual life. I enjoyed it, but it felt a little empty in spots. I didn’t walk away having learned anything new, but I still had a great time. The character representations were fantastic, with Oscar worthy performances coming from Timothee Chalamet and Edward Norton. I wouldn’t be surprised if both of them were nominated this award season. Especially with Timmy. It didn’t feel like I was watching Timothee play Bob, it felt like I was watching Bob. That’s how you know you did a good job. The soundtrack was extremely good, which consisted of folk music, mostly from Bob’s songs. Timothee did a PHENOMENAL job with the vocals on them. You couldn’t even tell it was him singing. Overall, the film was entertaining, and though it lacked some juice in the storyline, I loved it. You can’t deny that Bob Dylan was one of the greatest and most influential songwriters and artists of all time. I’d recommend this to all biopic/music fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
