Heretic (2024)
Heretic
I think this is one of the more thought provoking movies I’ve seen this year. The reason the movie does it’s job so well is because of the psychological aspect. It relies much more on getting inside your head, rather than jumpscares or gore. It kind of reminded me of ‘Hereditary’ in that sense. Maybe it’s an A24 thing. My head was left spinning by the time the movie ended. In a good way. I was left with questions, curiosity, and just a tense feeling. The story does a great dive, and a very interesting dive, into religion. It’s hard to put into words exactly how it does, but it brings up questions and theories that I’ve never thought about, and I liked the way it tackled it. Especially coming from someone who is religious and is also obsessed with horror. The plot goes way deeper than I thought it would. Like I said, more in your head than anything else. Hugh Grant absolutely carries the movie, and it’s one of the best performances I’ve seen this year. He’s so eerie and ominous, while still *just* maintaining an almost friendly touch. The blend of character traits was done astoundingly well. The two Sisters also did an amazing job, and I loved their characters. The production design was also great, and I love how you feel trapped in the house with everyone else. It had the same vibe as ‘Barbarian’ and ‘Saw’. Overall, this movie was well constructed, and though there are some moments that seem a tiny bit confusing and maybe a little flat, it was still great. I waited several months for it to come out, and I wasn’t at all disappointed. I’d recommend it to all horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
