Paint Your Wagon (1969)

Paint Your Wagon

  • This movie was definitely a little strange, but still a good watch for those who love musicals and westerns. It had your typical “musical drama” feel to it, and it somewhat reminded me a little bit of The Music Man. It had the same mood and tone in certain scenes, and even though there were some moments of the story that were kind of awkward and corny, the overall feel of the movie was fun and energetic. I didn’t really care for the story and plot, but I did like the gold-mining parts. It had the classic Western feel to it, despite some of the comedic elements of this movie. The music was actually really good, which I didn't expect it to be. Several of the songs were very fun to tap your foot to, and most of the vocals were great. Some of the songs were kind of strange, but in a good way. Clint Eastwood is one of the last people I would’ve thought would be in a musical, but he did a really great job. I loved his voice, and for the most part, it was really smooth and nice to listen to. My favorite song that he sang was “I Talk to the Trees”. It’s a beautiful love song with a heartbroken but hopeful message, and Clint performed it gorgeously. Every song he did was performed gorgeously, and I’m really impressed. The overall setting and design of this movie was good, and the town that the movie was set in was your typical western town. It had the classic saloon and bar, along with other things you often spot in Westerns. Some of the bits of this movie also reminded me of McClintock!, so that gave the movie a good feel. I don’t think I would watch this movie again, but I would still recommend it to Eastwood fans, as well as those who like musicals.
