Silenced (2011)
Silenced
Good grief, that was messed up. In many senses, this was educational and sheds light on real problems all over the world. It brings awareness to horrible situations that need to be known. However, sitting through this was very difficult in many scenes. The content matter is obviously very sensitive and emotional. It’s hard to stomach, for two reasons: it deals with very disturbing situations, and also shows those situations. That was my biggest problem with the movie. It physically shows several of the things that happened to the students, which was completely inappropriate. I guess it makes sense, because the filmmakers really wanted to push the point of what was going on. But it crossed a line, and I don’t know how in the world it was allowed to be filmed. It actually makes me kind of mad. You don’t need to see it to know what was happening, and it was just disgusting. On the flipside, it really pushes how vile these aggressors are, and helps you recognize certain behaviors. I did enjoy the acting, especially from Gong Yoo. He is able to communicate so much with his eyes. Overall, this was a sad and disturbing movie, that both crosses a line, but also teaches important lessons. It’s not one I’d watch again, but it’s probably worth seeing, especially if you like movies like ‘Sound of Freedom’. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
