Dr. No (1962)
Dr. No
This movie is the start of one of the greatest and most iconic franchises to ever exist. Everyone has heard of James Bond. Whether you’ve read the books, seen the movies, or neither. Everybody knows who James Bond is. He’s probably the most famous secret agent to ever exist, and this movie is his cinematic birth. So of course, you need an actor to start him out strong, so who do you get? Sean Connery, the most perfect man for the role. No Bond actor will ever, I repeat EVER, live up to what Sean did with the role. He is the definitive Bond. A lot of people really like Brosnan or Craig, but Connery will forever remain on top. End of discussion. Anyways, the story is a great start for the succession of movies to come. It’s the classic spy story everyone thinks of, with tons of fighting, guns, espionage, a killer car chase, and much more. It’s everything you could want in a spy movie. Now, this one isn’t my favorite, as you can tell by the Enjoyment Score. I still like it, but I do have some minor complaints. One is that even though it jumps right into the story, it definitely takes some time to get to the good stuff. It takes a little too long for everything to unfold. Secondly, because of that, the movie feels a little longer than it is. I think it’s a good length, but a couple minutes could’ve been shaved off. Besides those things, I love this one. The use of the James Bond theme song is perfect, as it’s literally one of the greatest themes ever written and performed. The entire score is really good. Lastly, the special effects were very solid for this time, especially with the use of more practical effects and makeup rather than CGI. Overall, this movie is a brilliant start to a successful and amazing franchise. It provides a great antagonist, a great protagonist, and plenty of entertainment. I’d definitely recommend it to all spy/action fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
