The Northman (2022)
The Northman
Robert Eggers, you sneaky little dude. I mean, c’mon. This man only has four feature length films, and the first three are all absolutely incredible. ‘Nosferatu’ obviously still has to be released (coming Christmas 2024), so I can’t judge that one yet. But based on his first three, it’s going to be either perfect, or just about as close as you can get. But that’s beside the point, let’s talk about this one. I remember when it came out in 2022, and I saw the trailer about a thousand times in theaters. I had planned to go see it, but then I never did. I definitely regret it. Seeing this in theaters would’ve been absolutely amazing. It’s so profound, in ways you would never expect. You might think it’s just a revenge movie, but the surrealism is perfectly blended with the gritty time and setting, and it’s just so….deep. It makes you think and look past the action, and really think about the dialogue. That applies to the entire plot. It’s so beautifully written. It’s not just an action movie, it’s not just some random historical drama. It’s gorgeously crafted to show the different character traits, and both the mental and physical physique. The entire cast is fabulous, with fantastic performances from Alexander Skarsgard, Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, and Willem Dafoe. Even if a certain actor doesn’t have that much screen time, they make every single second count. The cinematography was also on point, with a very drabby color scheme, but one that still captures every detail of the landscape. Overall, this movie was breathtaking, overwhelming (in the best way possible), and extremely underrated. I am very happy to say that I am a Robert Eggers stan, and I would recommend this to all action/drama fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
