Blade (1998)
Blade
As iconic as it is, I think that this movie is very out there and not super well made. I did enjoy a solid amount of it, but after a while it just gets weird and feels like a sloppy mess. The action was easily the best part. The opening scene was great, and sets the mood for the rest of the movie. There were several great fights that were a great blend of fantasy and realism. I liked the gore, and also the vampire aspect. On the flipside, the vampires are what makes the movie feel so odd. Not the concept, just the way it was executed. It felt more like an action version of ‘Twilight’ rather than a Marvel movie. All the characters besides Blade, Karen, and Whistler were awful and had no substance whatsoever. The acting was horrendously bad at times, though there were a couple moments that weren't horrible. Wesley Snipes did the best job. He’s just a tough vampire killer who gives no care to what he does, which is absolutely awesome. The story was incoherent and barely there. It was literally just Blade killing vampires and making a friend along the way. It was weak writing that could’ve delivered a greater story, but didn’t. The CGI was also pretty bad, but it was 1998, so it probably looked good back then. Overall, the movie felt very scattered and had weak characters, but I still mildly enjoyed it. I may revisit it in the future, and I’d probably recommend it to die hard Marvel fans, but besides that, it’s just another fantasy action movie.
