One-X (2006)
One-X
Now I’m not a fan of rock at all, so the only reason I listened to this album was because of a suggestion. Unfortunately, it just isn’t my cup of tea. To me, it just has the generic rock sound, which I pretty much can’t stand. Call me a boomer, but it’s just too loud and doesn’t make sense. However, that doesn’t stop this from being a good album. Musically, it was pretty well put together, even though I had a hard time sitting through it. It’s often hard to find the good side of something when you don’t like it, although I actually did enjoy most of the lyrics and some of the melodies (but not a lot of the vocals). The album opens up with “It’s All Over”, which at first I thought sounded decent, but it lost me pretty quickly. But, the next two songs I actually mildly enjoyed. Both “Pain” and “Animal I Have Become” were somewhat fun, and of course, they give a great beat to tap your foot to. I also really enjoyed the lyric side of those songs. “Never Too Late”, “On My Own”, and “Riot” were also very solid songs, though I didn’t like them. As I said, I just can’t stand rock. “Get Out Alive” follows, and I somewhat liked this one. It’s hard to mention specifics about these songs because I’ve only ever heard them once, but like the others I liked, “Get Out Alive” has an awesome beat, and I loved the main melody. “Let It Die” also falls under all of that. But, everything after “Let It Die” kind of lost me, and I didn’t care for the rest of the album at all. I will say that it does finish very strongly with “One-X”, and it leaves you with a nice reminder of the band’s main sound. Overall, I was definitely not a huge fan of it at all, though it’s actually structured nicely and has some fun messages. I do want to tip my hat to all the band members of Three Days Grace for all contributing to each song. To me, it’s rare nowadays to find an album that’s entirely written by the actual band, so good job to them for actually making their music. I’d recommend this album to all rock fans, though I know I won’t be listening to it again.
