The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
The Last Temptation of Christ
For the longest time, I avoided watching this movie because of some of the more negative reactions to it. I know it’s controversial, and it’s been preached against, and protested against. But upon finishing it, I’m really glad I watched it, and I actually disagree with a lot of the negative opinions. I can understand why certain groups might find it blasphemous. I think a big reason is because this movie (and the book it was adapted from) wasn’t pulled from the Gospels. There are events in the movie found in the Gospels, but it also creates scenarios that are almost an alternate reality for Jesus. You have to think of Jesus from this movie’s perspective. If Jesus was the son of man, he would have been subjected to temptation. We already know that Satan tempted him, but this movie does a great job of showing other instances as well. Also, it does a good job of showing the free will that Jesus possessed, like all other humans. God allows humans free will, so their love for Him would be genuine, rather than forced. Because of that, this movie’s Jesus represents the human side of his body and mind. Willem Dafoe was perfect for the role. He is convincing and powerful. Growing up as a Christian, I think this is one of the best representations of Jesus I’ve seen. Scorsese did a heck of a job with this, and no matter what some people say about this movie, I think it provides an interesting glimpse on the humanity of Christ, and the effects of temptation and pressure on his mind. The movie definitely feels slow sometimes, but the point is reached effectively. I’d recommend it to all religion/drama fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
