Nosferatu (2024)
Nosferatu
Robert Eggers is the MAN. THE MAN. Despite only having four feature films, he has absolutely knocked each one out of the park. This particular one is a remake of the 1922 classic, and despite being a remake, you can still feel the uniqueness behind it. The story itself was very similar to the original, with some added elements, mostly characters and a couple minor details. But you can still completely see Eggers’ vision, and his own style. Visually, it’s extremely bland and has a very empty color palette, but that’s what makes it feel so……soulless. Much like Count Orlok. The cinematography was phenomenal, with great use of shadows and darkness. It compliments the villain very well. Speaking of which, this specific Count Orlok is so awesome. He’s cruel, ominous, and above all, the most brutal Orlok we’ve ever seen. His design was fantastic, and though he doesn’t pop as much as Max Shreck’s interpretation, he still looks amazing. I think the addition of rotting skin and a big black moustache was one of the smartest decisions they could’ve made for him. Very big kudos to the makeup and FX department. Skarsgard did such an incredible job, and he will surely boost this version of the character into horror infamy. The entire cast was perfect, with outstanding performances all around. I can’t highlight one specific person without highlighting them all. Just give everyone their awards already. The costume design was authentic, the production design helped immerse you right into the times, and the sound design was absolutely mind blowing, with much focus on Orlok’s voice, the music, and the scares. Lastly, the score was booming, haunting, and enchanting. There were so many moments where I would get lost in the music, as it added so much depth to each scene. Overall, this film just falls short of the original, but it’s still a modern horror masterpiece, and should be witnessed by everyone in theaters. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
