The Invisible Man (1933)
The Invisible Man (1933)
Man, talk about a good movie. It’s not as much horror as sci-fi, but it still has a very eerie feel. I haven’t read the book either, although I’ve never really cared much for H.G. Wells’ work, so that’s partially the reason. However, after seeing this, it makes me want to check it out. The story, much like the other Universal classic horror movies, is extremely simple, yet packed full of fun detail. It’s not anything that overloads you, but just enough where you can enjoy yourself while still learning. I won’t go into specifics of the story, but based on the title of the book/movie, you can clearly guess what it’s about. There’s some fun little turns all throughout, so you’re never bored. I will say there were a couple scenes that felt slow, but for the majority, I absolutely loved it. It wasn’t too long either, which was nice. Perfect length for these kinds of movies. The acting was a little funny at times, much like other old black and white films. Claude Rains did a fantastic job voicing Griffin, and even though you never see his face till the end, you can always feel his presence without physically seeing him. And speaking of that, the special effects were incredible. There were a couple instances where you could see some wires, but for 1933, it was downright perfect. My mind would’ve been completely shattered if I saw this in 1933. Such a splendid job by everyone involved. Finally, the score was great, with strong themes that gave the movie a creepy and ominous feel. Overall, this movie is basically perfect, minus a couple parts that felt a tiny bit slow. I’d highly recommend it to all sci-fi/horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
