The Untouchables (1987)
The Untouchables
As the great Al Pacino once said: “What a picture.” That’s about the best way I can sum up this movie. I’ve only ever heard good things about it, but wow. I wasn’t ready. All my expectations were shattered in every way possible. For me, it’s easily one of the best movies I’ve watched in a long time, as well as one of the best movies from the 80’s. It perfectly encapsulates the 1920-30s, as presented through Prohibition, the mob, Al Capone, corrupt police, and fedoras and tommy guns. I absolutely loved it. If I was alive during this time, I absolutely would’ve joined the mob. How sweet would that be? Anyways, the story is (as just mentioned) the mob and Al Capone, and the hunt to bring him down. I love how it’s a great mix of action and dialogue, with a perfect blend of both. You get some very fun scenes of shoot-outs, and also some scenes with discussion and detective work. It keeps you sucked in for the entire movie. Kevin Costner is in the spotlight for most of the movie, as he’s the central character and obvious standout. I love what he brings to the screen (as always). He always looked so stern and concentrated, but you could still see so many different emotions. Sean Connery was, of course, spot on as always, and so was De Niro. Everyone has the perfect physical look. The accuracy was great. I also really loved the graphic nature of the movie. It provides a first hand look at what cities were actually like back then, and you realize the brutality of some people. The score was also really good, with great climactic themes. Overall, this movie was just about perfect, with some fun little twists. I’d most highly recommend it to all crime, drama, and history fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
