Happy Gilmore (1996)
Happy Gilmore
I’ve never been the biggest fan of Adam Sandler, but this movie is helping him grow on me a little bit. I still need to see more of his stuff, but I did like this movie a decent amount. It wasn’t anything groundbreaking, but there are certainly some memorable moments. I’m a big sports fan, and I always love a good sports comedy. I’ve also had some past experience with golf (not much, but some) so I liked seeing the comical take on it. It was a nice story that was easy enough. Just a guy competing for money to help his poor grandmother. Mixing such a professional sport with a foul mouthed, obscene character like Happy was almost genius. I love how the movie is funny without going over the top with crude humor. Yes, there’s definitely language, but it’s tolerable and not overdone. Some will probably disagree. The acting wasn’t fantastic, and about what I expected. The dialogue wasn’t great, and definitely corny at times. But there were also some really great line deliveries. I also enjoyed seeing Carl Weathers and Ben Stiller. I had no idea they were in this, so that was a nice surprise. Finally, the soundtrack was awesome, with some good hits from the 70s and 80s. It fits the mood and entire feel of the movie. Overall, it wasn’t anything crazy, but decent enough. I’d probably recommend it to all comedy/sports fans.
