Deadpool (2016)
Deadpool
This is just about exactly how I thought it would be. From what I’ve heard from friends and online discourse, I was expecting a vulgar, graphic, and fun CBM. And that’s precisely what I got. Before this movie came out, I’d never even heard of Deadpool, but upon watching this and ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’, I now know way more than before (yes, I know, X-Men Origins doesn’t really count). It’s cool to see a character I’m not super familiar with, and having an entire movie centered around him/her. It’s almost educational, in a very fun way. So anyways, speaking of fun, I enjoyed this for the most part, and it had a nice plot. It does a fantastic job of being a solid origin story, without cramming it down your throat. The beginnings of Deadpool is highlighted strongly throughout a good chunk of the movie, but a majority of the movie is focused in the present day. You get just enough background knowledge to give you what you need, while still being in the current events. It all walks wonderfully. And as stated before, the character of Deadpool was relatively unknown to me, so watching everything unfold is cool. All the characters added a great touch of humor and emotion to the movie. Ryan Reynolds is seriously perfectly cast (as expected), and I also loved seeing Edward Skrein as the main villain, as well as TJ Miller. I do think some of the language and references got a tiny bit old (I know I sound like a boomer), but it makes sense for the character and feel of the movie. The last few notes I want to make: the soundtrack was really good, the action was incredibly entertaining, the CGI/makeup was great, and it was all around a good movie. Sure, there’s a few things I’d change, but nothing crazy. I’d definitely recommend this to most superhero/Marvel fans, especially if you love the more comedic ones. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
