How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
I love Ron Howard and I love Jim Carrey, but this film doesn’t really cut it for me. Out of all the Grinch films, the original is still by far the best. This one incorporates the traditional Grinch story, but adds in some romance and additional storyline to help expand the runtime. Because of that, it definitely feels like it overstays its welcome. The goofiness and otherworldliness takes some getting used to. However, I will say this: the comedy and production design hugely help make up for it. The dialogue is very comical and Jim Carrey delivers one of his best performances. He’s iconic as the Grinch. His line deliveries are so on point, and you can’t help but love him. His makeup is extremely well done, too. That goes for everyone. All the looks of the different Who’s help give the film a very magical and fantastical feel that Dr. Seuss’ book has. Visually, it’s all very interesting. I guess when I think about it, really the only thing I have a problem with is that this is hard to sit through. But besides that, it’s not a horrible film. I just don’t care for it. I usually watch it every couple of years to see if I’ll change my mind if I like it, but I haven’t yet. We’ll see. Overall, the film has some weak points, but can still be enjoyed if you don’t think about it too hard. I’d probably recommend it if you like silly and exaggerated Christmas comedies.
