Superman III (1983)
Superman III
This movie is definitely underrated. Despite its negative reviews and poor reception, I enjoyed this one. It was a fun, nonsensical movie that gives you an interesting story. Although there was a lot involved, and the movie definitely felt a little overloaded, it still takes you on a fun journey. I wasn’t a huge fan of the main antagonists, as there wasn’t really anything special about them. They basically just felt the same as Lex Luthor and his band from the first two movies, so it wasn’t anything really original. But their villainous plot was still fun and corny. Although they were bland and boring, I still liked all the characters. I loved the introduction of Lana Lang, which was a nice change from seeing Lois for two movies. Although I love Margot Kidder as Lois, it was a good change of pace for the series. It brings a new love interest that keeps the story interesting. Christopher Reeve was, of course, awesome as Superman, although lesser so in this movie. They wrote his character in an unusual way for this movie. Although it was a bit different than what was previously seen, I liked the choice they made. Getting to watch him have to fight himself internally was new and fresh, instead of just having a physical villain. Richard Pryor was also pretty good, and though a cheesy character, he was funny. I definitely enjoyed his addition to the story. The effects were pretty good, and they were about the same as the first two movies. They had the same classic look that the first two movies had. Though they might sometimes be easy to make fun of, I still like the old nostalgic feel they give the movie. The music was extremely good, and of course the main theme was phenomenal as always. Although John Williams didn’t do the score, it still used his theme, along with some new music. Overall, this movie was kind of sloppy and crammed, but I still enjoyed it. I’d recommend it to Superman fans, and of course, those who love cheesy superhero movies.
