National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)
National Lampoon’s Vacation
This is the first movie in the National Lampoon Vacation series, and despite its great reviews, this one disappointed me. I definitely didn’t find it as funny or enjoyable as I thought I would. There were many scenes that were totally hilarious, but besides those, I got a bit bored. To me, it didn’t remain consistent in its enjoyableness, which I thought it would. The story was pretty funny, and it had a great start and finish. I always love road trip movies, so that’s why I was excited to watch this one. But, like I said, it felt a bit slow to me. I really enjoyed the characters however, and Chevy Chase was hilarious as always. He always has great line deliveries and hilarious facial expressions. I also loved Aunt Edna. She was old, crabby, and obnoxious, which made her a pretty funny character, though hard to deal with. I loved what they did with her character, and to me, it was one of the funniest parts of the movie. The rest of the cast was great as well. Some of the acting was a bit corny, much like the movie, but it gave it the perfect 80’s feel. The physical comedy aspect was also corny, but that’s what made it great when it was present. Chevy always does a great job of showing emotion and pain whenever something physical happens to him or his family. The music was decently good, and like the rest of the movie, it had the cheesy 80’s feel. I liked the main song, and it was pretty catchy and fit the movie well. Overall, this movie is cheesy and kind of dumb, but definitely worth a watch if you like comedies. I wouldn’t watch it again, but I’d still recommend it to those who enjoy the National Lampoon movies, or physical comedies.
