Peeping Tom
Truly a wonderfully and weirdly smart film. I consider myself quite the horror aficionado, so this watch was a long time coming. The first time I had heard about it was in ‘Scre4m’, as it’s often referred to as one of the first slasher films, and one of the first to follow the killer’s POV. One of my favorite things in film is when film is used within the film to drive the story of the film. I didn’t know I could use the word “film” that many times in one sentence. Having Mark be obsessed with filming the fear on his victim’s faces was absolutely awesome, and what I was referring to when I said “wonderfully and weirdly smart”. It uses an almost scientific standpoint to give Mark motive for his killings, so the whole time you’re watching it, there’s more than just slashing and dashing. Beautifully written and beautifully realistic. Plus, using a tripod knife as a weapon is pretty much one of the coolest ideas ever for a serial killer. It deserves to go up there with other infamous weapons: Freddy’s glove, Jason’s machete, Leatherface’s chainsaw, Ghostface’s knife, etc. Put Mark’s tripod up there with those. Anyways, the performances were all solid, though Karlheinz Böhm was phenomenal. He was cool and collected, though extremely unsettling and uneasy behind the eyes. You could see the maniac in his gaze and movements, but he can play it off as natural. One of the greatest serial killers ever in film. Lastly, this is a visually fantastic film. The contradiction of the vibrant colors on screen compared to the dark material was gorgeous and somehow makes this film even more disturbing. Overall, this film is wickedly smart, and one of the best written crime/horrors I’ve ever seen. Especially considering it was made in 1960, around the same time ‘Psycho’ came out, and the controversy that surrounded it. Wonderful, I love it! I’d recommend this to all horror/crime fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
