Candyman (1992)
Candyman
I really liked the story that this movie has, and I absolutely loved the use of an urban legend to give the music its antagonist. It gives you a killer that isn’t just a crazy man behind a mask, but someone who actually has an interesting and unique backstory. I really liked where it’s set, and the use of a slum neighborhood. The use of the neighborhood citizens who all fear Candyman gives Candyman an even stronger and scarier presence throughout the movie. Although the story was good, there were several different times throughout the movie where I was a little confused, and a few events felt kind of rushed, and they lacked an explanation for what was happening. Besides that, the movie was pretty well made, and most of the characters were written well. Although it was well made, I did find myself getting somewhat bored through a few scenes, but there were also scenes where I was really sucked in because of how awesome Candyman was. Tony Todd did a great job of establishing his presence in each scene he’s in, and he did a good job of being creepy without having a certain gimmick or relying on a creepy mask. I also loved the use of the bees throughout the movie, because even though a bee isn’t scary, putting hundreds of them on the victim or in Candyman’s mouth is quite terrifying. The music was also decently good, and though there were some weak songs, there were also some fun moments where it made the scene pretty great. I think watching this movie once is enough for me, but it's fun to watch right near Halloween.
