Curse of Chucky (2013)
Curse of Chucky
Ok, so the first half of this was super slow and boring, but the last half was really good. I think the Rotten Tomatoes critics are being a bit generous with their score, however, because this felt like a pointless continuation. Now, I’m glad I got to watch it, but the franchise would’ve been fine without it. I think the more modern setting takes away the classic 80s campy feel, which to me, was disappointing. It focused more on the slasher aspect rather than the almost comedic mood. It was definitely a darker movie, both physically and story-wise. I did like the setting, as it gives a refreshing change of scenery. The characters were good, but not great. I didn’t really care for any of them, so I wasn’t too upset when they met their fates. The only actual good one was Chucky, and even then, he had a slightly different look than from the 80s/90s. I wasn’t a huge fan of the changes, but that’s probably because I just wasn’t used to it. Story-wise, it wasn’t anything too crazy, although it did add some background history behind some characters. It was nice to see some of the past, and it gave a tiny bit of context to certain situations. That part was well done. The gore was fun, especially a certain someone’s jaw (it gave off some ‘Saw’ vibes). Some of the deaths weren’t anything too out there, but still well executed (pun intended). Also, the work that went behind Chucky was really well done. His facial expressions were great, as well as his movements. Everything was fluid and believable. Overall, this movie was decent, but I definitely prefer some of the others over this one. I’d recommend it if you like slashers, but make sure to be caught up in the franchise first.
