Wild at Heart (1990)
Wild at Heart
Oh my gosh I love David Lynch so much. I’ve been working his way through his filmography and the way it stays so consistent is awesome. What was nice is that I knew very little about this movie going into it, so everything was new and original. It’s funny because as of the time I’m writing this, this movie isn’t available on any streaming platforms, and as far as I can tell, you can’t rent it on YouTube either. I went ahead and bought the Blu ray on Amazon for $14.99, so the fact that that was the only place to get it, made me a little skeptical on how good it actually was. But I totally liked it and I loved the combination of Lynch’s mind and a love story intertwined with crime. It’s not his best ever made, but I thought it was very solid all around. I’ve read some of the critiques (mostly about the structure), and I can understand certain negative thoughts. But I think it all fit together nicely, though some flashback scenes sometimes felt a little out of place. The story was good, and as I stated a great mix of love and thrill. Much like ‘Blue Velvet’, a lot of the movie feels authentic, but still has a great sense of surrealism. There’s also a cool, almost nostalgic feel to it, and the performances help sell the movie. Cage and Dern are great as always, with amazing scenes from Jack Nance, Crispin Glover, and of course, the one and only Willem Dafoe. All of the actors steal the spotlight whenever they’re on the screen. Overall, this movie is pretty good, and definitely one I’ll be watching again. Great story, great performances, and plenty of moments that scratch your brain but in a good way. I’d recommend it to all crime/romance fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
