Safety Last! (1923)
Safety Last!
I’ve been asked the question, “What is your favorite silent film?” This movie is my answer. There is no denial that this is the greatest silent film ever made. It’s as simple as that. Some people may not agree, but I’m here to say that it is. The amount of physical humor this film possesses is insane, and it will never be topped. It never once gets old at all. The story is so simple, yet holds so much joy and anxiety. I get very emotional about this movie, and once you get me rolling, I won’t stop, so I’ll try to keep this short. I mean, I’ve seen this a million times, and every time, it continues to blow my mind. The forced perspective and props used for this is just incredible. The photography and camera placement is so smart and well done. That’s partly what makes this so great. Another part is Harold Lloyd. One of the greatest actors of all time, if not the greatest. His name should be spoken in every household on this planet until the end of time. The amount of effort he puts into his character makes me absolutely respect the crap out of him. Not just the physical stunts, but his expressions and mannerisms. He never fails to make me laugh. Now, normally with movies with this magnitude of greatness, I’ll usually rant on for another three pages. However, I can’t put into words how perfect this movie is, and you just need to see it for yourself. Experience the genius of Harold Lloyd. Please. I’m begging you. If you die before seeing this, then you’ve failed yourself. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it NOW!
