my friends call me slum (2023)
my friends call me slum
For the first album in his career, Slum Chuck has a pretty solid debut. The album in itself is constructed in a good way, though if you know me, you know I don’t like rap. However, I somewhat enjoyed this, as every song has some great tracks. The lyrical content remains a problem for me, as it’s just filled with so much NSFW stuff. Not to take any shots or anything, but for me, it’s all the same. There wasn’t really a break to think about what it all means, cause like I said, each one is very similar. My other big problem was the layering and autotune. I mean, each song is so overloaded with it that it’s hard to appreciate the natural talent of Slum. Not to say he did a bad job, cause he didn’t. It’s just so hard to sit through all the songs when they’re all so…electronic. I would love some acoustics and live vocals, which would give so much more personality to the album. However, given the resources that Slum has, he did a great job, and it makes me happy to see someone of his age do so well with what they got. Seeing young people in music, and enjoying it, is really cool to see. Overall, this album has some really great beats, though like I said, it’s overloaded with autotune. I have struggles hearing the real voice behind the music, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad album. I would probably recommend it to all rap lovers (plus, I loved the great movie/TV references). If you want to hear more about the album (and music in general), take a listen to my most recent episode of The Raspberry Bush, where I interview Slum. It’s titled “Music: A Conversation with Slum Chuck”. Anyways, go check out the album now, free on Soundcloud!
