About a Boy (2002)
About a Boy
What a nice little feel good dramedy. I don’t think I was expecting anything super great, but I think this came off as being better than what I thought it would be. A lot of the time, these kinds of films are very silly and sappy, which is sometimes hard for me to sit through. But this one stands out because of the great chemistry between the actors. The story itself didn’t stand out to me, but the characters were relatable and easy to feel for, which these films don’t always do a great job of doing. I had enough time to get to know each person, understand their actions, and follow their own story throughout the film. The performances hold up, too. Hugh Grant is very believable in his role, and though sometimes he drives you up the wall, you learn to love him. Toni Collette is also great, and somewhat reminiscent of her role in ‘The Sixth Sense’. And the star is a very young Nicholas Hoult. He’s just so vulnerable and you immediately want to protect him and be his best friend. He’s so innocent and so easy to identify with. Him and Hugh Grant mesh together really well. Going back to the story, it wasn’t anything super amazing, but still very touching and emotional. There’s a few bits where I questioned the writing, and kind of a couple moments where you’re just like, “Why did they do that?”, but it’s not often. I enjoyed it. Overall, it’s a very solid film that makes you hurt a little bit, but also provides tons of humor and healing. I would definitely recommend it if you love those 2000’s drama comedies. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
